Nerunder Working Kelpies

For nearly thirty years Nerunder dogs have been bred for working sheep, cattle, goats pigs and reindeer. Good tempered, hard working dogs with plenty of natural ability are what I seek and what I offer.

A short history

The Name

Australia is also known as 'the land down under'. Nerunder is Swedish for down under.

The Breed

         The Working Kelpie origins go back to a strain of dogs imported from Scotland to Australia over 150 years ago. The Border Collie is said to have originated from around the same area. The harsh climate  and vast expanses of Australia shaped the evolution of the kelpie into dogs that are short coated, light footed, medium sized, with stamina, intelligence, an independent spirit and a natural gift for careful treatment of the animals in their charge.

The Breeder

          I am an Australian running a sheep and cattle farm in the south of Sweden. Together with two partners I lease a 1000 hectare military firing range for grazing the animals. Good working dogs are necessary since we are constantly moving the animals on and off the range depending on the extent and variation of the military exercises. I only breed from dogs that have proven their all round ability here on the farm. As an active member of the Swedish Working Kelpie Club I have good contact with other owners and breeders here.

Dog Sense

           Over 15 years of experience as a trial judge and trainer with the Swedish Herding Dog Club has given me some practical insights into the training and breeding of herding dogs (mainly border collies and working kelpies) in general. For a wider understanding of dog behaviour and genetics I owe a lot to Clarence J. Pfaffenberger's book 'The New Knowledge of Dog Behaviour'

Client Relations

           My oldest repeat client (a dairy farmer) bought his first pup in 1985. In 2003 he bought his third pup. Over the years only one pup I have sold refused to work (a bad experience with electric fencing and cattle nearby while still young was, I think, the cause.) Replacement pups are offered if the dog's working ability is not to your satisfaction (you only pay the freight, vet. and registration charges)

 Healthy Dogs

            All my working dogs are checked for Hip Dysplasia. Some bloodlines have been discontinued despite excellent working ability because of the risk of ailments with a probable genetic origin.
